The Senior Traffic Offender Plus program is a court-ordered driving program for drivers age 50 and over. It is the first course of its kind that was created to offer real life practical solutions for the issues and problems of older/senior drivers.

The course emphasizes and addresses the dangerous ramifications and implications of medication use among seniors, specifically as it relates to driving. Seniors are now involved in 2.3 million medication related driving collisions each year. Older drivers have a higher vehicle fatality rate than any other age, except drivers under the age of 25. The elderly are involved in more than 9 million reported identify thefts each year. Senior citizens represent 12% of the U.S. population, but are involved in 35 % of all fraud cases.

Today, one in three Americans is now 50 or older. By 2030, one out of every five Americans will be over 65 years of age, and most of them will probably be licensed to drive. Each year nearly 200,000 older adults were injured in traffic crashes. An average of 500 older adults are injured every day in crashes. Older adults represent 13 percent of the U.S. population but consume about 30 percent of all prescription drugs. Many of the 200,000 crashes were medication related.

This course also focuses on the potential problems that older/senior drivers may face on Florida roads, such as dementia, diabetic shock, slower reflexes, vision and hearing issues, as well as other obstacles to safe driving attributed to the aging process. The course reviews in detail the rules of the road, both reminding and reinforcing these critical aspects of driving to our senior citizens. Everyday driving issues such as bad weather, speeding, following distance and tailgating are all covered and taught. We also address the physical changes drivers can potentially expect as they age.

As a former New York City Police Officer and Broward County Court Deputy, I have been active in crime prevention efforts in Florida for many years. I have worked with Former Attorney General Bob Butterworth on crime prevention programs for the elderly. I designed and created the Combat Auto Theft program that is used in many counties in Florida. I also created and designed the program to be a well-rounded safety course for our older citizens by including a crime prevention section as part of the curriculum. The focus is on crimes often perpetrated against the elderly, such as con games, identity theft and illegal telemarketing scams. Over 8.4 million people fall victim to some form of identity theft each year. Senior citizens represent 12 per cent of the U.S. population, but are 35 percent of all fraud victims.

The Senior Traffic Offender Plus course was designed to make the senior driver more aware, introduce new driving laws and sharpen their skills of driving. The Senior Traffic Offender Plus is court-ordered Only by a judge in lieu of a regular BDI. Unless court ordered by a judge, it can’t be substituted for a BDI course; it caters to the needs of the senior.
